Dr. Dinesh Talwar is a practicing Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal surgeon with over three decades of experience. He is currently a Senior Consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, and Centre for Sight, New Delhi, where he has been working since July 2003. Dr. Dinesh Talwar, who is an alumnus of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, completed his postgraduation from the same Institution in 1988 and then joined the Retina Unit of Dr. R.P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, initially as a Senior Resident and then worked as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology from 1992 to 1998, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology from 1998 to 2002 and from 2002 onwards as Additional Professor of Ophthalmology, in the Vitreo Retina Unit. In 2003, He joined Apollo Indraprastha Hospitals and Centre for Sight, New Delhi, where he is currently practicing, as a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo Retinal Surgeon.
He has extensive independent experience in medical and surgical management of vitreoretinal disorders including complicated retinal detachments with severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy, vitreous hemorrhage due to Diabetes mellitus or Eales’ disease with associated traction or combined traction-rhegmatogenous detachments and traumatic retinal detachment, of over Three decades. He was a pioneer in introducing Photodynamic therapy in North India and was one of the early adopters of anti-VEGF agents for intravitreal use including Bevacizumab, Ranibizumab, and Aflibercept for Age-Related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and vascular blocks, in the country.
He has pursued a career in research in addition to his clinical pursuits and has guided over 25 Research projects during his tenure at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
Dr. Dinesh Talwar has a special interest in the medical and surgical management of endophthalmitis and was awarded the Dr. P. Siva Reddy Oration by the All India Ophthalmological Society at its Annual Conference held in Bhuvaneshwar in January 2005 for his work on this subject.
He has always had an academic bent of mind and in the course of his career, he has edited two books, written seventeen chapters in books, published more than 50 articles in International peer-reviewed and National Journals, and made more than 150 presentations in various National and International conferences.
Dr. Talwar is also keenly interested in Medical Education and was the editor of the book “Assessment Strategies in Ophthalmology: A panoramic view”.
In addition to Dr. P Siva Reddy's Oration awarded by AIOS, Dr. Talwarhas also received the Prof. Dr. Mohammad Daud Khan Oration from SAARC Academy of Ophthalmology in June 2018 and was the recipient of the Sadguru Medal for Outstanding Service towards Ophthalmic Education and Teaching in India by the ShriSadguru Seva Sangh Trust in 2018, the A.C. Agarwal Trophy for Best Paper by Delhi Ophthalmological Society in 2000, 1997 (as Co-author) and in 1994 (as Presenter) and Dr. R.N. Roy Memorial best paper award by Indian Public Health Association.
Dinesh’s domain knowledge of the management of vitreoretinal disorders and his keen analytic abilities give him a unique ability to provide insights into the optimal management of patients with various ophthalmic disorders. Consequently, he has been on the Advisory Boards of major pharmaceutical companies operating in India like Novartis India Ltd, Bayer India, INTAS, and Allergan India.
Dinesh has specific expertise in the delivery of clinical care services in a tertiary care setting and has recently used, evaluated, or purchased the following products: New drugs: Ranibizumab (Lucentis), Aflibercept (eylia), New equipment: constellation ( alcon ) vitrectomy machine, vitrectomy machine (app as Amy).
His management skills have led to his involvement in the organization of various conferences including the 61st AIOS Conference in New Delhi in 2003 as Co Organising Secretary.
Dr. Talwar has served the Delhi Ophthalmological Society, a body of over 4000 members as the Founding Editor of its Journal, Joint Secretary, Treasurer, and Secretary of the Society from 1999-2001. He is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Life member of the All India Ophthalmological Society, Vitreo Retinal Society of India, and The National Society for the Prevention of Blindness ( India ).
