Diabetic retinopathy is an eye consequence of diabetes (die-uh-BET-ik ret-ih-NOP-uh-thee). It is brought on by injury to the blood vessels that supply the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the rear of the eye. Diabetic retinopathy may initially just cause minor vision issues or no symptoms at all. However, it may result in blindness. Any person with type 1 or type 2 diabetes may develop the illness. This eye issue is more likely to occur if you have diabetes for a longer period of time and your blood sugar is not well controlled. The best defense against vision loss is to manage your diabetes with care. Even if your vision appears to be fine, get a yearly eye checkup with dilation from your eye doctor if you have diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is more likely to occur if you have diabetes before to becoming pregnant or if you develop diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes). Your ophthalmologist may advise you to have more eye exams during your pregnancy.
